German culture is historically steeped in folklore and mythology, and the vast forests of Germany have long been a setting for the mysterious and sometimes disturbing world of fairy tales. Schwarzwald, meaning The Black Forest, is an area in southwest Germany known for its dense forests and picturesque villages. Through painting, illustration, drawing and diorama, each artist conjures stories and ignites imagination. Schwarzwald is an exhibition featuring five artists whose work takes us into realms of fantasy and myth. Kim was commissioned to create the centrepiece installation at the V&A during LDF 2015 for crystal company, Swarovski. Kim Thomé runs his studio from Margate, working on private commissions and developing new installations and furniture. The work is a starting point in a longer process rather than a final execution. These include car-screen sun strips, privacy glass, lighting filters and paper card. Materials used are readily available but presented primarily in collages, resulting in colour interactions and patterns. In-Frames is a collection of visual trials and material compositions exploring the use of different materials in new ways to create graphic images by blurring, overlapping and obscuring.
